Severity: Normal
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Apache

Blocker: ---

as for many of our logrotate default configs, the one for apache2 needs some
work

the current config has the issue that the postrotate "rcapache2 reload" is
running much too often (I've seen this easily 8 times in a fraction of a
second)

first of all, all blocks for files that are identical inside should be merged.
currently I see two groups of files, one being rotated at 1M, the other being
rotated at 4M filesize. I can't judge if this differentiation makes sense, but
this would cut it down to at least two groups.

Inside that group, we should either use "sharedscripts", which makes logrotate
only do the reload once after rotating files, or use "lastaction" instead of
"postrotate", which basically does just that: run only once after and only if
any
files have been rotated.

Next proposal would be to add a "sleep XX" command to wait for a little after
the
reload to let apache settle again, before another logrotate job would do this
again. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/logs.html proposes 600 seconds,
which
is IMHO pretty long, but no sleep at all does not sound too good either.

Another issue, but not fixable here is the use of multiple logrotate config for
the vhosts configured inside apache, but nothing we can fix here (in these
cases
it's probably worth to think about different solutions than logrotate).
