--- Comment #13 from Malvern Star 2011-08-21 19:40:52 UTC ---
After commenting out the line in smb.conf including dhcp.conf (the file does
exist by the way), I once again tried to start Samba using "/etc/init.d/smb
restart".
The following information was appended to the samba log file:
[2011/08/22 03:27:37, 0] smbd/server.c:1134(main)
smbd version 3.5.8-2516-SUSE-SL12.1-i386 started.

[2011/08/22 03:27:37.005962, 0] passdb/secrets.c:73(secrets_init)
Failed to open /etc/samba/secrets.tdb
[2011/08/22 03:27:37.006883, 0] passdb/secrets.c:73(secrets_init)
Failed to open /etc/samba/secrets.tdb
[2011/08/22 03:27:37.006945, 0] smbd/server.c:1234(main)
ERROR: smbd can not open secrets.tdb
After this change, the following commands were issued:
"service nmb status" returned "unused"
"service smb status" returned "dead"
Even after updating to the suggested Samba packages (and leaving the dhcp.conf
line commented out), this output did not change.
