/usr/share/doc/packages/net-snmp/rc.snmptrapd uses the following to specify
logging :

/etc/sysconfig/net-snmp specifies default SNMPD_LOGLEVEL as "n". this results
in snmptrapd logging in a file "/n" (it also creates a device file at

as per 'man snmpcmd', "-Lf FILE Log messages to the specified file."

thus the solution is to change "-Lf" in
/usr/share/doc/packages/net-snmp/rc.snmptrapd to -LF

/etc/init.d/snmpd is already using the correct version.

same problem also with opensuse 11.3, if anybody wants to fix it there as well
