Just had the same problem happening with the latest update (2.6.37.6-0.7) on my
laptop.

But I was able to trace the problem back to a lack of disk space.
I have a small /boot partition (62MB) and for some reason I seem to have
installed a few extra kernels (pae, xen) (don't remember doing it). Anyway,
when I went through the Update workaround, it complained about the lack of
space and I deleted all unused kernels, reinstalling the desktop one.

Now all is good again.
mkinitrd result is similar to above, just including different modules and a KMS
driver.
