Sounds quite reasonable although I doubt that this would be of use in practice
since under normal circumstances you will always use either a set of old
libraries or a set of correspondingly newer ones because otherwise you are
going to run into a host of unfulfilled dependencies (also using the
appropriate pkg-config and ld-linux.so).
Having to state glib-2.0 explicitly to pkg-config is not satisfying because we
already had a glib-1.5 and we will have a glib-2.1 all of which an average
program should run with (without having to edit the configure script to change
the version number all the time).
If you really want to keep the references to glib-config then I would suggest
you to do the following:
* if a glib-*.pc file exists use it (the newest if no version-number is
given)
* if no glib-*.pc file exists or the queried glib version is below v1.3.7
(the fist one which has dropped glib-config) then use glib-config.
