https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=692329 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=692329#c0 Summary: iTCO_wdt kernel watchdog failure causing a system crash Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: paul.guyot@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1 The watchdog iTCO_wdt causes a sudden reboot of the entire system every time AVG Anti-Virus v8.5 (avgscan) runs on root (/) as root user. It runs for 20 to 60 min, and then causes the PC to suddenly reboot. The same behavior has been noted in large scp file transfers, but is systematically reproducible every time under AVG. This was originally noted under kernel version 2.6.37.6 (standard 11.4 kernel). Tested on 2.6.39-rc5 as well yields the same error. The fact that this is tied to more than one program and a kernel function is why I have filed this bug report as Major. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Login as root user 2. Run: avgscan -a / 3. Watch system crash and reboot. Actual Results: System reboot and crash all of a sudden after approx 20 to 60 min. Following is recorded in the /var/log/messages file: May 1 11:45:59 linuxbox kernel: [38429.349995] iTCO_wdt: Unexpected close, not stopping watchdog! Have troubleshot and discussed this problem in the following opensuse forum thread: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/4590... Also submitted to paste.opensuse.org under: http://paste.opensuse.org/86652867 By adding the iTCO_wdt to the blacklist under /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf it solves the issue. AVG completes successfully. System architecture is x86_64 running on Intel 2500K Sandy Bridge CPU with Asus P8P67 Evo Motherboard with new B3 Stepping. 16GB of RAM. Hard drives are as follows: - Two 1TB drives in mdadm RAID 1 for /, /home, /boot, and swap. Swap is not in RAID, but configured as two independent 4GB swaps (8GB total). - Four 2TB drives in mdadm RAID 5 for /data partition. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
