I've tried to install several time a new OpenSuse (since 11.2 until 11.4) and I don't get a working installation with 1280 x 1024. I used diferent hardware (amd intel CPU, nvidia ati intel graphic cards, 586 x86_64 versions ) but non will work! Some times I can boot in the default-modus, but I get only 1 of 5 boots correctly for example on my acer aspire T160 (amd-cpu and ati x1300 graphic-chipset). On my other systems run OpenSuse 10.3 - 11.1 without any problems. When I set the VGA-mode during boot to 0x31a or 0x31b it will show this resolution until the X-sever start ruining. Then it switch to 1024x768 and there is no way to change it with the system-tools. Ok, there are several ways published in the internet to make it run, but these are not my way for a solution. I connect all systems to one set of keyboard, mouse and display with a KVM-switch. On two HP-laptops the installation will work without any problems, but they have only displays with 1024x768. I tried on two of my systems an mandriva 2010.2 with KDE4 and all will work fine!
