https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=663976 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=663976#c0 Summary: VMWare Server reports errors in kernel version when configured - cannot find header files Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: richAllcorn@ITNetworking.info QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.6) Gecko/20100626 SUSE/3.6.6-1.2 Firefox/3.6.6 The VMWARE SERVER installs wonderfully, but when you try to configure it the app reports that the kernel is not compatible and VMWARE must be recompiled to be compatible. When you answer the prompts from the script to proceed, it argues tha the compiler is not the one used to compile the kernel. GNU? Are you serious? I tell it to use the GNU compiler installed anyway (see below) ### messages from configuration script ### None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override. Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.5.0", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.5". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.5" anyway? [no] yes ### END and this is where it gets to be a problem ... it cannot find the headers! ### MESSAGES CONTINUED ### What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] The path "/usr/src/linux/include" is a kernel header file directory, but it does not contain the file "linux/version.h" as expected. This can happen if the kernel has never been built, or if you have invoked the "make mrproper" command in your kernel directory. In any case, you may want to rebuild your kernel. What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] ### END and that is the predicament I am in ... Please advise ... email: richallcorn@gmail.com, richallcorn@itnetworking.info ... Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.install VMWARE SERVER 2. run vm-config.pl 3. problem occurs ... Actual Results: see notes above Expected Results: VMWare should compile/configure properly so I can press on using the application. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
