If the machine is booted without nomodeset, the radeon driver is used. The
radeon driver gives a somewhat better visual experience (direct rendering,
etc...) but a side effect is that the audio stops working entirely.

If the machine is boot with nomodeset, the radeonhd driver is used and
everything works quite well.
