As for me, nvidia 96.43.18 does work with Xorg 1.8 without using -ignoreABI,
that is, the X server starts as it used to. The changelog for this release also
mentions "fix hang on >= 1.7" which would indicate 1.8 support was added at
some point, though that is not mentioned in the changelog anywhere.
NV (X server started with -dpi 96):
$ xdpyinfo | grep -i dots
resolution: 96x96 dots per inch
$ xrandr -s 1280x1024
$ xdpyinfo | grep -i dots
resolution: 42x45 dots per inch <- this sucks
$ xrandr -s 2944x2208
$ xdpyinfo | grep -i dots
resolution: 96x96 dots per inch <- ok
NVIDIA (-dpi 96):
$ xdpyinfo |grep -i dots
resolution: 96x96 dots per inch
$ xrandr -s 1280x1024
$ xdpyinfo |grep -i dots
resolution: 96x96 dots per inch <- ok
$ xrandr -s 2944x2208
$ xdpyinfo |grep -i dots
resolution: 221x208 dots per inch <- sucks
So I'm screwed either way. That said, xrandr does not even show the actualy
resolution I am using, let alone let me configure a VirtualSize with a
different resolution.
