A lot of this is affected by your power management settings:

1) Is the locking of the screen relevant versus just leaving the machine idle
for 20 minutes.

2) By "wake up" you make it sound like you suspended. I'm assuming this is not
the case.

If you are using gnome check the value (under power management preferences) for
"Put display to sleep when inactive for". Try "never" and then lock screen (or
just leave as idle).

What video driver are you running and are you using kms?
