My best guess is that the network connection to an NFS server was down, either
the interface on your machine was down, or the server was dead, or some cable
unplugged or similar.
NFS and block indefinitely when trying to talk to a server that it cannot

The safest thing to do is the unmount with "-l" so as not to wait
for uncontactable servers.

Would that explain your situation? Can you reproduce it with the network all
working? If so, add '-v' to the unmount command and post the result.
