https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=638847 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=638847#c0 Summary: useless error messages from modem-manager (Got failure code 100: Unknown error) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Ulrich.Windl@rz.uni-regensburg.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=389088) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=389088) Sample debug output from modem-manager User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.11) Gecko/20100714 SUSE/2.0.6-0.1.1 SeaMonkey/2.0.6 When trying to configure a "surfstick", the messages from modem-manager found in syslog are not helpful. For example, you see: Got failure code 100: Unknown error This reads like "something is wrong, but I have no idea what, where, or why" When putting the thing into debug-mode, you may guess what's wrong. Example: ** (modem-manager:4056): DEBUG: (ttyUSB0): --> 'ATE0+CPMS?<CR>' ** (modem-manager:4056): DEBUG: (ttyUSB1): --> 'ATE0+CPMS?<CR>' ** (modem-manager:4056): DEBUG: (ttyUSB2): --> 'ATE0+CPMS?<CR>' ** (modem-manager:4056): DEBUG: (ttyUSB1): <-- '<CR><LF>ERROR<CR><LF>' ** (modem-manager:4056): DEBUG: Got failure code 100: Unknown error ** (modem-manager:4056): DEBUG: (ttyUSB2): <-- '<CR><LF>ERROR<CR><LF>' ** (modem-manager:4056): DEBUG: Got failure code 100: Unknown error The proper error message probably would be ``Port /dev/ttyUSB1 did not understand command "ATE0+CPMS?"; answer was "ERROR"'' A related problem is that modem-manager does not know about "SIM busy" (which takes a few seconds when registering with the network). modem-manager disables the device then: ** Message: Modem /org/freedesktop/ModemManager/Modems/0: state changed (disabled -> enabling) ** (modem-manager:4056): DEBUG: (ttyUSB1): --> 'ATE0 V1<CR>' ** (modem-manager:4056): DEBUG: (ttyUSB1): <-- '<CR><LF>OK<CR><LF>' ** (modem-manager:4056): DEBUG: (ttyUSB1): --> 'AT+CPIN?<CR>' ** (modem-manager:4056): DEBUG: (ttyUSB1): <-- '<CR><LF>+CME ERROR: SIM busy<CR><LF>' ** Message: Modem /org/freedesktop/ModemManager/Modems/0: state changed (enabling -> disabled) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. See details above Actual Results: User is frustrated when trying to get things working. Things don't work. Expected Results: Use should be able to find and fix the problems, guided by useful error messages.
