I do compilations on a faster host all the time, even with NFS volumes.

The only trick is that the "make modules_install install" part has to be done
on the target machine. The compilation can be done on any machine, even if the
architecture is different. The necessary step in that case is to use the ARCH
argument in the make command. For example, when I build an i386 system on a
computer running an x86_64 version of Linux, the make step becomes "make

One additional speedup: If the build host is SMP, then add "-jX" to the make,
where X is the number of CPUs + 1. That puts a compilation on each CPU plus one
job for control. It really makes a difference.
