I came across this error with one of the 11.2 milestone LiveCDs. In that case,
the contents of the file /boot/grub/mbrid on the USB stick didn't match the
contents of the USB stick's MBR at locations 01b8-01bb. This must have been a
Kiwi compilation error, as the locations 01b8-01bb of the LiveCD iso, and of
the MBR, should be identical, as the dd command transfers the data from the iso
to the USB stick in strict order. I was able to fix the booting problem by
changing the value of the MBR locations to match that of the /boot/grub/mbrid
file.
In the case of this bug, the fact that it booted the second time means that the
two sets of locations match. It could have been a read error of the USB stick
the first time that caused the error.
