This sort of thing is typically caused by a firewall getting in the way,
or some other networking issue.
You should check that 'statd' is running on both server and client,
find out what ports they have chosen using
rpcinfo -p | grep status
and check there is no firewall in place that might be blocking the
server and client communicating over any of those ports.
if you are sure that statd is running on both server and client, and that
there is no firewall getting in the way, then I would need a tcpdump trace
on see any more.
On the server, run
tcpdump -s 0 -w /tmp/dump host ip.address.of.client
then attempt to log in on the client.
Then interrupt the tcpdump, compress /tmp/dump, and attach it here.
