The symptoms as described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/526919 seems to be
the same. Removing  'xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr' from /usr/bin/startkde
script did not help. 'xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr' was not present in the
/usr/bin/X11/startkde script. 

Strange: I logged in using the 'fail-safe' option in the grub boot menu. That
worked without any problem (even automatic logon worked!)  and I got the KDE
desktop.
