How about asking for the password for a volume before opening it? That would
allow automatic detection of the underlying file system as well as give the
user an explicit opportunity to reformat the volume with a different password
or none at all.
I have to imagine that password encrypted swap volumes are more common than you
expect. Anyone who bothers to encrypt other volumes probably understands that
if they suspend to disk, their passwords and other sensitive data might be
found in the resume image in plaintext.
