MD is not writing past the end of the disk.

It is writing *near* the end of the disk because that is where is stores
it's metadata.
super_written detects IO fails when writing to sector 72163775 on
the 9GB devices, and sector 72163775 on sdb. These addresses are within
the size of the device (between 128K and 64K from the end of the device).

The log does show when logical block 2249 was mapped to, just that an IO
error resulted.

This is all most certainly related to the SCSI buss reset.
As Jeff says, probably some bad piece of hardware.
