Summary: kmsg behaviour has stopped syslog-ng from logging
kernel messages
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE 11.1
Version: Final
Platform: x86-64
OS/Version: Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Normal
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Kernel
AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: g.w.kant@xxxxxxxxxx
QAContact: qa@xxxxxxx

Blocker: ---

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:
Gecko/2009120200 SUSE/3.0.16-0.2.1 Firefox/3.0.16

Since a few kernel updates ago it looks like kmsg doesn't wake up sleeping
/proc/kmsg readers anymore as kernel messages are coming in.

As a result e.g. messages from netfilter are not logged anymore via syslog-ng
into the separate file /var/log/firewall

I don't know if my analysis is correct, but if I stop syslog-ng and run

cat /proc/kmsg

no new messages are being logged. However with older kernels new messages are
logged this way. This behaviour has not only been observed on openSUSE 11.1.
This happens on previous as well. It doesn't happen on 11.2.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Observe /var/log/firewall with a latest kernel

Expected Results:
kernel messages being processed by syslog-ng ending up in files under /var/log
