You try to update your kernel instead of installing the new. Install it via
rpm -ivh kernel-default-2.6.3...rpm

You want kernel-default-2.6.31.12-0.0.0.17.bb438b6.i586.rpm
The installer gave this error:
preload-kmp-default-1.1_2.6.31.8_0.1-6.9.3.i586 requires kernel-default =
2.6.31.8-0.1.1, but this requirement cannot be provided
