I just tried:

aplay -D hw:0 --buffer-size=88200 --period-size=44100 --mmap audio_01.wav

If it is used, cat /proc/asound/card*/pcm*/sub*/hw_params gives exactly the
same result, but the sound is OK:

closed
access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED
format: S16_LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 44100 (44100/1)
period_size: 44100
buffer_size: 88200

It seems, that pulseaudio daemon is too slow to prepare data in time on slower
computers.
