i have verified the kvm stuff. and its exactly as i suspected.
when i connect the original vga dsub15 cable from the monitor directly to the
mainboard (asus m4a785td-v evo) the sax2 program can also display some stuff.
although there is still a problem, i will try to illustrate with some digital
camera pictures later if needed.
so i did init 3 to be back in standard textmode console (alt+f2).
then i disconnected the monitor vga dsub15 cable from the avocent kvm switch,
and dragged it over directly to the mainboard vga dsub15 port (the mainboard
has an additional dvi-d and hdmi port, both are always empty in these scenarios
here). also the avocent kvm switch vga dsub15 cable was also the only thing
that was connected to the mainboard vga dsub15 port, so same port, same
everything, only once directly the monitor to the mainboard, once the kvm
switch in between.
so when its directly connected, the sax2 comes up, and the monitor onscreen
menu displays 1280x1024 at 60hz or something, whereas sax2 detects my 1680x1050
monitor properly and says 24bit color. the whole screen is out of the
boundaries to the left hand side and i cant adjust it with
auto-settings/auto-position with the monitor keys. it just doesnt work.
also when actively selecting test settings inside sax2 it brings up that arrow
screen where you can align the monitor picture with sax2 and resize the screen
but this screen is also being displayed at 1280x1024 although 1680x1050 was
offered before.
so even with direct cabling the radeonhd driver seems to be broken or something
is amiss and it cant talk to the monitor properly.
this is really bad :(
is there some way to protocol the low level commands and language that the
radeonhd speaks with the mainboards connector ports, or the flatpanel monitor?
i need to move this mainboard any minute now and i cant do much more testing
with it any more, but i will attach the logs from sax/x11 from this directly
connected session to be of some help, still this is really annoying and a huge
problem.
as i said before, i dont remember the intel driver (integrated graphics on that
gigabyte mainboard aswell) having any sorts of problems once i sorted out those
bios settings that my other old bugreport is all about back with that board.
everything was at 1680x1050 and crips and sharp, and exactly centered on the
screen.....
well windows never gave me any problems with this avocent kvm switch nor did
any other operating system i have tried in my lab, only recent linux systems
with these amd/ati drivers are a real pita :(((
sigh.
