The motherboard was replaced in May (the infamous AMD/NVIDIA overheating
problem endemic to both the dv9000 and dv6000 series) and it has the latest
possible BIOS on it. It exhibited this problem, in one fashion or another, all
the way back to 10.3. I can't, of course, rule out some sort of funky design
issue with this series of laptops, but it does work fine with Ubuntu and
Fedora, so I submit there is some difference in the device probing/sizing at
this stage of the installation that's worth scrutiny. Note that it doesn't take
very long for it to get to this point on the initial booting, and by that time,
the kernel has correctly noticed/identified the USB drive (slight difference
from the text of the original report of 26 Sep 08) - would you like a fresh
(manual) transcript?
