Heh... the drive firmware has screwed up in another create way. ATA drives
used to behave pretty okay before but with the influx of new SSD vendors it's
getting worse quickly. The difference is HPA (host protected area) which is
used to limit the drive capacity and hide the area at the end. These days,
this is often used to hide recovery partition. For several reasons including
backward compatibility, openSUSE kernel unlocks this area by default. In the
vanilla kernel,
ata2.00: HPA detected: current 125043311, native 125045424
In openSUSE default kernel
ata2.00: HPA unlocked: 125043311 -> 125045424, native 125045424
But after unlocking the drive reports that no such sectors exist when the
unlocked area is accessed. Arghhhh.... this would be the first ATA device ever
which reports HPA area, allows it to be unlocked and then fail the actual IOs
on the area.
Well, I guess I'll have to quirk it so that HPA unlocking isn't used on the
device. Can you please post the output of "hdparm -I /dev/sdb"? Also, please
complain as loud as you can to the vendor. This really shouldn't be happening.
