http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=528397 Summary: Runlevel 5 + KDM: X freezes with a black screen using vesa video driver Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Factory Platform: x86 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rkrell@gmx.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.2) Gecko/20090730 SUSE/3.5.2-1.1 Firefox/3.5.2 Starting in runlevel 5 directly with KDM, X freezes with a black screen using vesa video driver. The X server is definitely hanging and doesn't even respond on control sequences from keyboard, as ctrl+alt+backspace or ctrl+alt+F2 and so on. My video chipset is an Intel 865G. Changing to default runlevel 3 in /etc/inittab and launching runlevel 5 by 'init 5' as root from console, KDM runs fine and no more problem occurs even in the following X session. This problem happens at least in M4 and M5, with kernel 2.6.30.2 and 2.6.31-rc4 not sure whether it hadn't been introduced already ealier. It seems like there is a problem with preload or something similar. I reported a similar problem also at freedesktop.org: http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22904 After several tests and configuration I'm not sure, whether both problems, with vesa hier and intel there, don't even have the same cause. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. /etc/X11/xorg.conf as used by the installation CD's (vesa driver) 2. Reboot to runlevel 5 3. As soon as kdm comes up there is a black screen and X is frozen. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
