A bunch of question.
How did you start the Xsession, which Xserver you can't stop by switching to
runlevel 3? Maybe you booted into runlevel 3 and then did a 'startx'?
What does happen if you terminate regularly your Xsession? Still a login
screen, i.e. is there a display manager running at all?
After switching to runlevel 3. Can you still switch back to your Xsession with
Alt-F7?
