http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=498893 Summary: kernel console=ttyS1 hangs if not present Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: vogt@itwm.fraunhofer.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.7) Gecko/2009022800 SUSE/3.0.7-1.1.6 Firefox/3.0.7 Hello, I have the following menu.lst: title openSUSE 11.1 - vmlinuz-2.6.27.7-9 root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27.7-9-default console=tty console=ttyS1,57600 showopts initrd /initrd-2.6.27.7-9-default This hangs the booting process, most likely because the kernel tries to initalize the ttyS1 which is not present at all. removing: "console=ttyS1,57600" boots fine. This should not be the case IMHO. The kernel should not stop because of that. At least it could write some "alive" messages.
Still trying to intitzailze not existing device... Still trying to intitzailze not existing device... ...
etc.. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Add console=tty console=ttyS1,57600 to menu.lst 2.make sure a ttyS1 is not there 3.boot Actual Results: kernel hangs in "calibrating or something". Machine needs Power Off. Expected Results: a booting kernel and a message "could not initialize ttyS1. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
