Providing more info for comment #1:
First, I was not using the proprietary Nvidia driver before upgrade, and I'm
not using it after the upgrade, so the comment about the "absence of an open
source X server driver" does not apply. The other thing is that the user in
question could log in after the upgrade without a problem; the problem occurred
after some settings were changed.
Regarding the suggestion to remove all gnome configuration: While technically
valid, this means that the settings of ALL GNOME applications would be lost
which is completely unacceptable from a user's point of view. (Isn't GNOME
about usability and stability?)
Unrelated to those GNOME issues, there is an issue that Crtl+ALt+F1 fails to
work once the X server is in the state described, so I think it's an issue with
X11 (and/or related infrastructure). I'll provide some more information in
attachments.
