The symptoms were identical. My touchpad acted like an absolute pointing device
that clicked each time I touched the touchpad. Even though the logs showed the
synaptics driver loading, it appeared to somehow be mixing up the events from
the different mice with each driver.
I was not able to get each pointing device working individually, and the
touchpad acting in proper fashion, until I found the device for each mouse and
manually reconfigured xorg.conf to point to those specific devices.
I did not go through FingerPress, MaxTapTime, or grub kernel line changes as
described.
I only tested with KDE4, and not KDE3.
