This comment is only half related to this bug, but anyway ... some other
projects use ssh for secure data transfer: users register their public ssh
keys, and then all data transfer goes through ssh connections (utilizing port
forwarding or not; both should work well enough).

The benefits of this approach are that:

- ssh already has a large number of useful security features that don't
need to be reimplemented, and it is well proven code.

- Re-entering passwords can be avoided with the ssh-agent (ssh-add).

- Beyond registering the public ssh keys, I think the minimum changes
required would be quite small.

- It doesn't introduce any desktop dependencies.
