How do you map your Compose key? I'm using a simple way such as

setxkbmap -option compose:caps

You can confirm the mapping with setxkbmap -v:

Trying to build keymap using the following components:
keycodes: xfree86+aliases(qwerty)
types: complete
compat: complete
symbols: pc+cn+inet(acer_laptop)+compose(caps)
geometry: pc(pc104)

xev shows the following output when tapping on Multi_Key (in this example
Caps_Lock):

KeyPress event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x4200001,
root 0x7c, subw 0x4200002, time 3282437, (47,48), root:(76,96),
state 0x0, keycode 66 (keysym 0xff20, Multi_key), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 33, synthetic NO, window 0x4200001,
root 0x7c, subw 0x4200002, time 3282683, (47,48), root:(76,96),
state 0x0, keycode 66 (keysym 0xff20, Multi_key), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

As I said, the Compose key works fine in other programs. I also tried to reduce
the setup, I have the same problem when I start X directly without window
manager or gnome settings daemon.
