The problem is how to detect the "stolen" memory by hardware components.
It's hard to distinguish 2GB memory modules divided into 1GB RAM + 1GB video
ram from 1GB memory modules + 1GB dedicated memory on the graphics card.
For system is looks the same. And for user it's also the same - applications
cannot run in video ram.
The displayed memory depends on the context - you have to differ between
installed memory, available memory for system, the space for applications, 1024
vs. 1000 powers (as mentioned in the previous comment). That's why are there so
many numbers.
