a. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace needs to be pressed twice nowdays. It beeps the first
Have you pressed it twice?
b. Have you done ctrl-alt-F1..6 to switch to another console?
If both things fail I would assume a problem with X.
It would be worthwhile to try the following:
A. When you log into the machine running the Xserver via ssh, can you do a vt
switch by doing something like
# chvt 1
(as root)?
B. From remote find the PID of the Xserver and do an
strace -p <PID>
Is the server woken up by a SIGALRM from time to time?
C. From remote get the PID of the Xserver and do:
gdb /usr/bin/X <PID>
to attach the debugger to the running Xserver. In gdb please do:
> bt
to get a backtrace. Please paste the results here.
