https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=461828 Summary: Partition Tool - Usability Unclear Labels & 'scary' warning Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rob.opensuse.linux@googlemail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- General Comments Whilst I liked working with the partitioner (most installers, I resort to CLI tools like cfdisk(8) and mkfs(8).) it is rather good. But with some work it can be really good, and much clearer. The Partitioner is not as intuitive as it could be. This faces in particular those using the Installer for 11.1. Some improvements could be made, very simply by improving the labeling of buttons. Firstly it is unclear on first usage, how you work with a partition. Once you realise how to select them, get the info and make some edits. When you are working within the installer, there should be a way to make it clear that you are just changing a proposal, that changes are only committed to disk later. That would allow for more relaxed working, and few mistakes as stressed users, tend to make more errors. Point 1 Then, there are some buttons, one is called "Finish". I think it would be better labelled as "Save" or "Apply" may be "Next". Finish, generally means that you are done with your edits. Point 2 The popup warning that "Only use this if you are an expert" is rather useless and also misleading. The graphical partitioner, may well be necessary, and used by non-experienced users. The installation may make it necessary, through poor automatically generated proposals, to guide the Partitioner. It would be far better, to offer an Advice document, perhaps a link, than make the end user that they are doing something 'wrong' because they are not expert enough. In fact the Partitioner tool, is lesser evil, to hand hacking of things like fstab(5) and other partitioning programs. A message along lines "Remember to be careful with your data - for advice click on Help" would be far better. It also does not imply that the Paritioning tool is unusuable except by geeks. The Help / Advice link could be Wiki page, perhaps text like the release notes in installer. Point 3 In built help, to get started with common tasks ie Select a disk or volume; double click on a partition; alter the settings Perhaps a text bar at top could be highlighed, on first use, and suggest things like "To begin altering disk lay out, select a volume in left hand pane"; then when that's done, it could change to "Select a partition" or if there are none "Create one with Add". -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
