First: the display should not stay black, since the machine does not even
suspend (as seen from /var/log/pm-suspend.log, it is detected as "unknown" and
then suspend is refused).
With the nvidia driver, the machine should simply suspend if you create a file
/etc/pm/config.d/sleep with
S2RAM_OPTS="-f"
in it. Without the nvidia driver, you could try to find the correct options as
listed on http://en.opensuse.org/s2ram
It might be necessary to blacklist the intel-agp module in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist for this to work correctly, see the NVidia README for
more details.

So does it work with S2RAM_OPTS="-f"? In that case it would be already fixed in
11.1 :-)
