I have followed the instructions in the 'Tracking down wireless problems'
article, and have found that I can make reliable connections using the manual
method. This was done quite a number of times (more than 5) across a range of
startups and re-boots, which included an overnight shutdown. At no stage did a
manual connection attempt fail.
I have attached a document showing the steps taken in making a successful
connection, starting at 1420 on Nov 09 2008. This is representative of all the
successful connections made. I have also attached logs for wpa_supplicant in
manual mode, /var/log/messages and /var/log/messages (all starting from the
same period), along with the dmesg output.
Note that I had problems using the procedure in the article. Using the two
commands:
# rcnetwork stop
# killall wpa_supplicant
led to a successful wireless connection every time, but while it was able to
connect to almost any IP address expressed as numbers - including the ISP's DNS
server - it could not ping, nor connect to, a 'www'-type address (eg,
www.google.com.au). I found that using the 'ifup' method in YaST cleared this
problem. I have plenty of notes detailing the woes found with the article's
method, if you are interested.
I also changed the networking method back to NetworkManager and captured an
unsuccessful wireless connection event, starting 1448 Nov 09 2008. I thought
that the wpa_supplicant logs with verbose info might prove more useful than the
ones already submitted. The attachments for these include
/var/log/NetworkManager and /var/log/wpa_supplicant, for the period of that
unsuccessful connection. The 'dmesg' and 'messages' logs for the successful
connection also span this event.
