Here is a reply from ACS, found on the very similar bug report posted on Debian
bug list (about the differences in models) :

Bonjour, Gerard,
Actually functionally there is no difference between ACR38U-CFC-BLI and
ACR38U-SPC-FDT. The difference in the name only indicate the difference in
casing shape, logo design, and packaging.
Both of them are of the same core - ACR38U.
I guess one of your reader, ACR38U-CFC-BLI, is damaged and caused the problem.
Regards,
Winnie

I'm almost sure my ACR38U is not damaged, because I've tested it without any
problem on a Windows XP laptop. So there must be something different in the
software driver for Windows and the one for Linux (I mean a bug fix or
improvement not implemented in the Linux version).
