I wonder if their Universal Print Drivers
for PCL5, PCL6, and PostScript have any real
benefit over the existing generic print drivers
for PCL5, PCL6, and PostScript in Linux, see
/usr/share/cups/model/Generic/
I assume their Universal Print Drivers
for PCL5, PCL6, and PostScript are not optimized
for the various particular models so that only
basic printing support is implemented.
If I am right, their Universal Print Drivers
for PCL5, PCL6, and PostScript do not have
have any real benefit over the existing generic
print drivers for PCL5, PCL6, and PostScript in Linux.
I already offered our openSUSE buildservice
to the HPLIP team in the past.
The openSUSE build service is free and open for any developer.
It can build packages not only for Suse but also for several
other Linux distributions and of course for several hardware
architectures, see
https://build.opensuse.org/
and
http://en.opensuse.org/Build_Service
where you find how to contact us regarding our build service.
HP is free to use our openSUSE build service to provide their
newest driver version as RPM for several Linux distributions
and for several hardware architectures.
Alternatively (if our build service doesn't fit their needs),
HP could contact the OpenPrinting workgroup
(the HPLIP team is already in contact with OpenPrinting):
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting
in particular regarding LSB based driver packages.
I assume you didn't actually talk to "Mark Hurd,
HP Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer
and President" personally and directly
but to other people at HP.
It would help us if you could ask them if you can
attach your mail conversation with them to this bug report
so that I can better understand what exactly is going on.
