Duncan suggested I suggest a solution - and of course, it's tricky.
A couple of heuristics I would personally find useful would be:
a) if the transaction as a whole fails: keep the packages we downloaded until a
transaction succeeds
[ people are going to come back and want to install things again ? ]
b) if the size of the cache itself is stopping packages from installing - then
prune the cache; or at least prompt for that to happen: I was downloading a
275Mb OpenOffice_org-debuginfo package requiring 1Gb+ of space, and it was
rather a pain (when it failed to install) - to find it was not in the cache, to
have to clean the cache, and re-download it, and so on ;-)
Do they sound reasonably intelligent ?
