There are no technical reasons for this decision. I tried to explain the
reasons, and they are of procedural nature.
Yes, of course, a compiler is only needed to compile things. And when we get
a bug report about gcc doing something wrong we want to immediately see
if it happens in the system compiler or in something else. The difference is,
that only the system compiler is supported, while the others are not (matters
for business products).
I don't see your point about easyness at all. Using the 4.3 compiler as
developer is not in any way difficult. Just configure (or change your
Makefile) to use gcc-4.3 as compiler, and be done with it. Has the additional
benefit that you yourself can be completely sure what compiler version you
are currently using, independent of whoever else might have update the gcc
package.
