I assume you're not using the freetype2 package from opensuse but one that you found in packman or in the opensuse buildservice, right? wrong, im running SuSE freetype [from oss repo it says, since dvd is disabled from repos]
to be clear: you _don't_ want subpixel hinting (the colorful 11:57am screenshot) and you consider that looking like "crap", right? right.
Can you show us the output of the command
xrdb -query | grep -i xft
Xft.antialias: 1 Xft.hinting: 1 Xft.hintstyle: hintfull
and the contents of the file ~/.fonts.conf please?
<?xml version="1.0"?><!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd"> <fontconfig> <match target="font" > <edit mode="assign" name="rgba" > <const>none</const> </edit> </match> <match target="font" > <edit mode="assign" name="hinting" > <bool>true</bool> </edit> </match> <match target="font" > <edit mode="assign" name="hintstyle" > <const>hintfull</const> </edit> </match> <match target="font" > <edit mode="assign" name="antialias" > <bool>true</bool> </edit> </match> </fontconfig> note, this is before starting kde4.
What font did you choose for your KDE3 clock? Can you please check in the settings? Is it the default (i.e. “Sans Serif 16”)? actualy it says "Albany AMT 17" But i never changed that.
If yes, what does the command fc-match "sans" output?
