1/ It sounds like you are using NFS to mount a filesystem from the server
onto itself. i.e. the same machine is both client and server for the
one filesystem. This is not really a supported configuration. It will
generally work, but performance problems would not be surprising.
2/ How many 'nfsd' threads do you have (cat /proc/fs/nfsd/threads). Have
you tried increasing this (write a larger number into that file)?
3/ How much memory is on the server? When the server is 'unstable', what
values appear in /proc/memstat for 'Dirty', 'Writeback', 'NFS_Unstable'?
4/ What export options are you using (in /etc/exports)?
5/ You say it works fine when in 'failsafe' mode. Could it simply be that
less is running on the server in that case? Maybe capture the output of
"ps axgl" in both cases.
