Yes this is controversal. I see some of them cite Steve Gibson from grc.com and
I usually leave the room when someone brings any of his points up. However I
accept that anyone sets his homepage like he wants.
As for what the default settings should be, I tend towards standards, which
means REJECTS and replying to pings. This also makes some issues better
supportable as the message "connection refused" would eliminate some possible
causes. Remember that for every possible solution you can add "...but it can
also be the firewall."?
This bug might very well end up as WONTFIX, but I'd like to look at the issue
from the point of empowering users. I'd rather see them knowing why they are
save (by exposing services they want) than letting them think they are safe by
some miracle peace of software they installed.
You can't change Gibson's disciples easily, but let's try to empower new users
by teaching them right.
Do any of POSIX/LSB say something about that?
