https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=358386 Summary: Many bit errors when downloading files over network - corrupted files Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alexander.koenig@koenig-a.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer Created an attachment (id=192948) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=192948) output of diff of hexdump (od -h) of two downloads of the same file (see text) Because of bug 358347 I am running the 32bit system on my 64bit hardware Hardware: Mainboard - MSI K9N Neo-F V2, NVIDIA Nforce 520, BIOS V2.3 Processor - AMD Athlon64 X2 5200+ Memory - 2x 2048MB Mushkin SP2-6400, CL5 Disk - 2x Samsung HD501LJ 500GB 7200, 16 MB Cache, SATA DVD ROM - LG GDR - H20N, SATA DVD RAM - LG GSA - H66N, SATA Display - MSI NX8600GT-T2D256EZ, NVIDIA 8600GT, 256MB, PCI-Express The system is connected to a INTELLINET 10/100Mbps ethernet switch which is connected to a Fritz!Box 5050 DSL Router (latest firmware). The symptoms explained below do not change when connecting directly to the router without switch. Other computers in this home network connected to the same switch/router do not have the problems described below. In order to exclude a problem of my specific hardware I exchanged the mainboard to a newer piece of the same type and more actual BIOS (my first trials were with the old MoBo and BIOS V2.1). With the above system and openSUSE 10.3 I experience an non acceptable instability of the network. Symptoms: - Network over the onboard Gigabit Ethernet device "RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller" is extremly unreliable. With the '8169' driver as provided with the distribution as well as with the '8168' Linux driver downloaded from the Realtek site and compiled on my system: Online update with YaST from the SuSE repositories gives in nearly all cases an "integrity check" error. Only for very small rpm files sometimes a retry works. Already the setup of the repositories fails in most cases. It is nearly impossible to open a connection to a secure server (https). - Network over USB, using the USB interface of my DSL router already works much better (but slower). I get only occasional "integrity check" errors for big rpm files (> 10MB), normally then load without problems on retry. I get still occasional warnings from Firefox about incorrect signature data when opening secure connections. Downloading a big file (10 MB) with Firefox twice typically results in two different files (same number of bytes but different with the diff command). - The most reliable (but still not satisfactory) setup is with a separate ethernet card (Realtek 8139). Integrity check errors during online software installation from repositories occour only very occasionally. Warnings from Firefox about problems with secure connection only in case of poor internet connection to the server. However, downloading big files with Firefox still is not reliable. Use of download managers like kget does not change the situation too much. E.g. Downloading the Windows 2000 installation file of the Adobe Acrobat Reader at http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/8.x/8.1/deu/AdbeRdr810_de_D... (24756800 Bytes) gives differing files. I include as attachment the output of diff for the hexdumps (od -h) of two downloads with kget of this file. Since I don't experience this kind of problems on older Systems running openSUSE 10.3 in the same home network I assume that it is due to insufficient support of the mainboard/chipset. Please tell me what additional information you need to evaluate the root cause of the problem to be able to fix it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
