To be sure I tested that certain x86_64 system again, and found it to work in
an interesting way.
I found that hald is sometimes(!) unable to start. I started kpowersave, and I
was looking at its icon, which immediately becames dim, when hald is not
functioning properly. Several times I started and stopped hald by
/etc/init.d/haldaemon, and I realized that hald starts correcly only every
second or third occassion (sometimes it's even worse).
So. When the icon of kpowersave became sharp, I was able to run virt-manager,
and when that icon became dim, I was unable to do so. The problem seems to be
that hald is somewhat unstable isn't it?
I will send some parts from /var/log/messages but there should be a better way
to debug it. What should I do? (BTW on my laptop - which runs a 32 bit version
os openSUSE 10.3 - hald (and thus virt-manager) works stable)
