Now I have switched to using an XEmacs with Xft/fontconfig support to
get nice anti-aliased fonts and better support for Unicode. A lot
more Unicode characters can be displayed when an XEmacs compiled with
Xft/fontconfig support is used. And, as truetype fonts are used
instead of bitmap fonts, bold and italic is no problem anymore. Even
if a matching bold or italic font does not exist, Xft/freetype can
fake a bold font by overstriking and a italic font by slanting the
font.
If you want to tryout an XEmacs build with Xft, you can try the
xemacs packages available at:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/M17N/openSUSE_10.3/
These have Xft support built in.
