Eeeek, smart log of the harddrive doesn't contain emergency unload count. And,
no, BIOS isn't supposed to mangle with harddrives. There was a case where one
notebook vendor thought including drive shutdown in power off SMM code and that
case still isn't fixed. BIOS just doesn't know enough to decide such things.
At this point, the most plausible conclusion is that you're confusing the sound
of disk spinning down correctly with the sound of emergency unload. What kind
of sound does your drive make if you plug power cable off the drive while it's
up and running?
