I had a similar experience upgrading from 10.2 to 10.3 A5. After much
experimentation I have a theory about this and similar bugs. I filed a bug
report against Yast2 - repair which damaged my 10.2 installation which was on
an IDE drive after installation onto a SATA MD raid array. My belief is that
the recent renaming of IDE devices from HDxx to SDxx which causes a
reallocation of existing SATA devices which are already named SDxx caused
confusion in the scripts that wrote the GRUB/LILO and other files which
actually result in writing the files to the wrong devices and/or pointing to
the wrong devices causing problems during booting and other conversion issues.
I do not have the logs anymore but
Bug 304657 contains logs and examples that illustrate the IDE - SATA confusion
issue which I believe occures during installation/conversion and the Yast2 -
repair. If I am right, it will bite anyone with IDE and SATA combinations.
including IDE CD-ROM drives because they seem to induce renaming/shifting
issues also.
