https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=304955 Summary: under "heavy" disk usage whole system becomes unoperational Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bluedzins@wp.pl QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- This was my original report (*) https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=192704 : =============================================================== By "heavy" usage I mean: * continuosly log saving for a longer period of time * copying big file from one partition to another (same disk) If such process really does I/O operations without stopping for a while it is actually a freeze. The same applies to Microsoft Windows, but it does not cheer me up :-) I process files about ~600MB in size and each time I have to either stop working when the I/O starts or to tune my app and filter data out, since saving all 600MB is too much for the system. It is not the matter of slow processor, 2GHz should be enough I think. =========================================================================
From then I tried to use nice to set priorities, but it didn't help (too much) not mentioning I cannot guess in advance if some program will do a lot I/O operations.
To be short -- if anything is read/written, the system is barely responsive. (*) I was asked to fill another bug report if this problem persists, and it does. I cannot even reopen the old report since meanwhile the structure of bugzilla changed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
